Introduction

Beowulf is the oldest epic poem in English literature. It was written in Old English, which is also called Anglo-Saxon. The poet's name is not known, so we call him an anonymous poet. The poem contains 3183 lines and tells the story of a brave warrior named Beowulf. For this reason, scholars call it the first masterpiece of the English nation.
1️⃣ The Background of the Poem
Most scholars think that the poem was composed in the seventh or eighth century. The only existing copy was written down around 1000 AD. This old hand-written book is now kept in the British Library in London. Interestingly, the story is set not in England but in Denmark and Sweden (Geatland). Still, it is an English poem because it describes Anglo-Saxon life and ideals.
2️⃣ The Story: Three Great Fights
The story moves through three great fights. First, Beowulf comes from Geatland to help King Hrothgar of Denmark. A cruel monster named Grendel attacks the royal hall, Heorot, every night. Beowulf kills Grendel with his bare hands. Second, he follows Grendel's angry mother into her underwater cave and kills her too. Third, after fifty years, as the old king of the Geats, he fights a fire-breathing dragon. He wins the battle but dies from his wounds. Only his faithful young soldier Wiglaf stands by him till the end.
3️⃣ Beowulf as an Epic Hero
Beowulf is a perfect epic hero. He is very strong, brave, and honest. He never thinks of his own safety. Like other epic heroes such as Achilles in Homer's Iliad, he fights against evil for his people. At last, he happily accepts death for the safety of his kingdom. So Beowulf becomes a symbol of true heroism, sacrifice, and leadership.
4️⃣ Main Themes: Good versus Evil
The central theme is the eternal fight between good and evil. Beowulf stands for good, and the monsters stand for evil. The poem also teaches loyalty—the sacred bond between a lord and his soldiers. Another strong theme is fate (wyrd). The poem says: "Fate often saves an undoomed man when his courage holds good." Here pagan and Christian ideas are mixed together. The famous critic J.R.R. Tolkien, in his essay "Beowulf: The Monsters and the Critics" (1936), proved that this poem is a great work of art, not just a history book.

Conclusion

In fine, Beowulf is not only the first epic but also the foundation stone of English literature. It gives us a clear picture of Anglo-Saxon society, culture, and heroic ideals. As the seed of all later English poetry, Beowulf will always hold an honourable place in literary history.

  • সেরা উদাহরণ/উক্তি: "Fate often saves an undoomed man..."
